micheal hooker (they/them) is a queer artist from Central Florida. They are a creative producer, researcher, performer, educator, and embodiment worker based in Brooklyn, New York.

Grounded in embodiment practices used in art and therapy, Hooker’s work is influenced by relational participation and rituals that shape languages, cultural perspectives and worldviews. In an attempt to reflect these intersections, they primarily use the voice and body in live performances, film installations, and both literal and figurative mixed-media collages. Their practices often extend into the social sphere. This is exemplified in the development of LSC: Writers & Performance Art Residency which amplified the work of underrepresented artists as well as their multi-media ‘solo’ exhibit, 100 Pitchers (OfHoney) (2017) at Cunsthaus Gallery in Tampa, Florida.

Trained in massage and polarity therapy, Hooker has taught at The Florida School of Massage and The Swedish Institute of Manhattan where they developed a pedagogic approach that integrates contemporary art into somatic therapy lesson plans. Hooker holds a Masters in Art and Public Policy from the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU and a bachelors in psychology from Goddard College.

Currently, they are conducting doctoral research surrounding embodiment, queer screen cultures, and insidious trauma at the California Institute for Integral Studies where they have held several fellowships and taught various embodiment oriented classes and workshops.

micheal has perpetual nostalgia for water fountains at the mall and a penchant for conversational Mad Libs. Their favorite Cocteau Twins song is Pink Orange Red.
